Build healthily with Burgundy Limestone
Always pre-occupied by the environment, the Association Pierre de Bourgogne, whose aim is to communicate and advise about Burgundy limestone, its utilisation and its workforce skills, has undertaken a study of the life cycle of 3 limestones to the CTMNC (Technical Centre for Natural Materials for Construction).
This has achieved the analysis of the complete environmental flux and impacts of the entire life cycle of the product, that is : the extraction in the quarry, the sawing and shaping, the energy consumed, the packing, the transport, maintenance during all its life and to finish the dismantling and recycling at the end of its lifespan.
Three information sheets have resulted from these analyses (Files of Environmental and Sanitary Declarations or FDES) which present the quantified projected environmental and sanitary impacts of a building product in a construction:
- Comblanchien stone used for an interior floor.
- Chatillonnais stone used for external flooring
- Walling stone as external facing in the form of coursed split rubble.
These information sheets are essential for project managers and construction firms who are planning low environmental impact buildings, but also for the private individual anxious to know the impact of his/her purchase on the environment in the short, medium and long term.
These excellent results prove that Burgundy limestone fully features in the aims of sustainable development.
The stone is extracted in the Burgundy quarries respecting the current environmental regulations, and worked according to rigorous procedures.
Its extraction and transformation requires little energy, and the water used is entirely recycled.
The stone can be recycled for ever. Its lifespan is estimated at 150 years.
It does not need any finishing product and develops a natural patina over the course of time. Water is its best friend to conserve its natural beauty.
Without forgetting:
- Stone breathes, offering a healthy environment inside the house. It does not release any toxic emissions into the air.
- Stone has a natural thermal inertia appreciated for under-floor heating for example.
- A natural regulator of temperature, it absorbs heat during cold periods and maintains freshness in summer.
So many good reasons to prefer natural Burgundy limestone to reconstructed or imported stone!
