The correct fixing of natural limestone tiles is as important as the choice of the stone.   Incorrect fixing and maintenance may result in stains, cracks and disappointment.  The recommendations that follow are intended as a guide based on our experience.   They are mainly based on general practice for fixing and maintaining Burgundy limestone in France.   They will need to be adapted to local building regulations, the availability of local building materials and to local climatic conditions.

We cannot accept liability for any failures which may arise when following these guidelines, nor for the performance of any of the manufacturer’s products mentioned or their use by the application team.  The technical notice or application instructions supplied with the product take precedence over our guidelines.

All the information listed in this document is given in good faith and cannot be considered as an exhaustive list.   This document is compiled solely on a voluntary basis and does not form a legal obligation.   The information which it contains is based on our knowledge regarding natural limestone sold by our company, and for the intended uses.  The standards DTU 52.1 and 52.2 or their equivalents in other countries are the applicable references and take precedence over our information. In spite of all these precautions all the people responsible including the owner, architect, builder and installer should be aware that the simple fact of working with a natural stone is susceptible to modify the overall colour to a greater or lesser extent.

General rules :
  • Limestone tiles should only be fixed by a qualified person.
  • Do not soak the stone before fixing.
  • Use only white sand or washed river sand and white hydraulic binders (white hydraulic lime , white cement or cement specifically prepared for limestone)
  • Do not spray with water, nor cover with a waterproof sheet after fixing.
  • The binding mortar should be prepared with a minimum of water.
  • Being natural stone, some variation of colour, sizes, thickness (if not calibrated), pattern etc. is to be expected.    To obtain the most natural effect and to display the full beauty of our limestone it is important to mix the entire quantity of tiling for each area.
  • If there are several pallets of stone it is preferable to open them all and take tiles randomly from all the pallets.  This will result in a harmonious blend of colours and will avoid concentrations of lighter, more patterned or more fossilized materials.
  •  Any tiles that have suffered small chips or minor damage during transport and unpacking can be set aside for perimeter cuts.
  • According to thze French DTU 52.2, the final appearance of the floor should be appreciated at the average height of a person (approximately 1,65 m) and at a distance of 2m, with the lighting not inclined at a low angle (superior to 45°)
